Getting used to University digital systems

As you prepare to start your academic journey in the UK, it's important to familiarise yourself with the key digital systems you'll be using throughout your studies. 

At the University of Greenwich, we rely on  online platforms to support your learning experience and provide access to crucial resources and services. These systems are designed to make your life as a student more convenient and streamlined, allowing you to manage your academic responsibilities efficiently.

We understand that navigating these digital systems may seem daunting at first, especially if you're new to studying in the UK. However, our dedicated support services are here to assist you every step of the way. This guide will provide you with comprehensive guides, tutorials, and hands-on training sessions to ensure you feel confident and comfortable using these essential tools.

Your guide to IT at Greenwich

The key university systems that you will be using everyday at University are listed below, some will come naturally and others might require a bit more practice to navigate and use: 

  • University Account and Password: Set up your secure account credentials to access our online services and resources.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): An additional security layer to protect your account with a second verification step.
  • Student Email: Your official university email address for important communications and announcements.
  • Wi-Fi Access: Connect to the campus-wide wireless network for internet access.
  • Timetable: Your guide to when and where your lectures and seminars take place. 
  • Digital Student Centre: Home to student advice and guidance. A one stop shop for your questions and answers. 
  •  Moodle: Access course materials, submit assignments, and participate in online discussions.
  • Turnitin: An online plagiarism detection tool for submitting written assignments.
  • Studiosity: An online tutoring and academic support service available 24/7.
  • Microsoft Software: Access to various Microsoft applications and tools for productivity and collaboration.
  • Library Catalogue and Search: Explore the university's vast digital collection of books, journals, and research materials.

What digital tools do I need at University

As a student joining the University of Greenwich, it's important to come prepared with the right devices to ensure a seamless academic experience. In today's digital age, having access to a reliable digital tools is essential for attending classes, accessing course materials, and staying connected with your lecturers and peers.

Consider bringing: 

  • A phone
  • A UK sim number
  • Laptop
  • Headphones
  • ​​​​​​​UK charger

The University does provide loanable laptops in our campus libraries as well as computer labs, but these have certain restrictions such as being available on campus only and a shared resource with fellow students on a first come, first serve basis. There are also multiple computer labs around our campuses too. What apps should I download?

Important apps you will need to get important information about your studies and life at Greenwich.

    • Outlook – Email app, all the most important information will always be sent to your email account.           
    • Teams - This is the university’s chat and message system
    • SafeZone – use this app to contact on campus security and help, including first aid.
    • Vygo – Connect with other students.

Keep Fuelled!

    • CauliBox – this app works with on campus eating places and helps you ensure that you can have take out, but still be environmentally friendly.

Spend Smart

    • UniDays – students use UniDays to find out and take advantage of all the shopping offers that are for students only!
    • Student Beans – discount vouchers for students
    • Your UK Bank app – a lot of banking in the UK is done via smartphone apps, its convenient and saves having to find a physical bank or wait long times in phone queues!

Help with studying!

  • Grammarly – English not your first language? Then you will love Grammarly. Grammarly can help check your spelling and grammar making sure your essays are all saying what you mean them to say.

Find your way around.

    • CityMapper - useful app for working out routes around Greenwich and London in general.
    • TFL - this has information about London’s public transport system. You can use to check for information about delays and other problems when travelling around.
