How to reference your work correctly

What are Reference Managers?

There are various reference management software available to you. This type of software is designed to help you record and build references. This page offers an overview of just a few reference management packages.

If you are using a University-managed laptop then you can download the relevant Reference Management software from the Software Centre.

All the Reference Managers on this page have three main parts which help you to use them effectively. The main account, the web importer, and the Word plugin. You can download all of these from various places, detailed below.

Mendeley

Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network. Cite as you write, read and annotate your PDFs on any device.

Download Mendeley Reference Manager from Software Centre on your University laptop. Install Mendeley Cite and Mendeley Web Importer using the 'Tools' option in Mendeley Reference Manager.

Zotero

Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organise, cite and share your own research sources. You can install Zotero on your University laptop through the Software Centre. This will then allow you to install the web importer and Word plugin through the 'Tools' option.

A quick guide to setting up and using Zotero is here: https://www.zotero.org/support/quick_start_guide

EndNote

EndNote Basic is also available as a Reference Manager. You can create a free account here: https://access.clarivate.com/login?app=endnote

You can download the Word plugin for EndNote from the Software Centre on your University laptop. EndNote has a separate web importer called EndNote Click which you can sign up to here: https://click.endnote.com/
