Cyber Security Top Tips

Cyber security has never been more important and cyber threats continue to evolve. Here are our top tips for keeping secure in today's digital world:

  • Download all software and operating system updates as soon as they are available, so that the latest security fixes can be applied.
  • Keep your password secure and update it regularly. Never tell anyone your password!
  • Remember, you must never share your university username and password with anyone, and that you must not use your university password on other websites or apps.
  • If you suspect that someone knows your password, or you have previously used it on other sites, please change it immediately.
  • Essay mills and sites which host stolen intellectual property ask for your student username and password for a reason; so they can use it or resell it to a cyber-criminal. This puts our systems, and your studies, at risk.
  • Keep your university email and login details for university systems access only. Even if the site is legitimate, don't use your university email address, user ID or password on social media, personal cloud services or online stores.
  • And remember; never share any of your passwords with others.
  • Ensure all your devices have passcodes. Be aware that synching between devices means there are multiple ways your data can be accessed.
  • Avoid sharing confidential information on storage devices that you could lose, such as USBs. If you must use a portable storage device, ensure it is encrypted.
  • Locking your PC when walking away from it. It only takes a second for others to access your accounts!
  • When on campus, use our secure Wi-Fi network 'eduroam'. If you use public Wi-Fi networks, follow this guidance on using it securely.
  • Shut down your PC when you have finished with it each evening. This enables security and operating system updates to be downloaded and installed.

Dealing with Common Cyber Security Problems

The National Cyber Security Centre provides advice for dealing with common cyber problems:

Accessing Papers, Articles and Texts

Our campus libraries should always be your first port of call for physical and online resources. Please do not use sites that bypass copyright or licence access restrictions, and never pay any publisher or provider directly for access to materials. If in doubt, you can always check with your academic subject librarian for advice.

  • Library Search is the tool to discover books, full text journal articles, conference papers and proceedings, reports, eBooks and some audio-visual content.
  • Document Delivery is a service enabling you to access books and articles not held within our university libraries. If you are unable to find the item you require, please complete the Document Delivery Request form via the link in LibrarySearch.

If you can't find the resources you're looking for, you can check in with our academic subject librarians, who can help you with database searches, finding information and literature reviews, they are experts in finding resources for your subject.

Essay, Assignment and Exam Support

Our Academic Support team continue to support you with academic skills workshops and tutorials covering a wide range of topics. As we approach the exam and assessment period, we are focusing on these skills and providing extra assistance.

If you’re looking for Essay Feedback, our Academic Support TeamStudiosity service and our Royal Literary Fellows can review your assignment and help you improve it before you submit.

Remember

If in doubt...

New cyber scams are invented every day. If something doesn’t look quite right or you are just not sure, contact the Student IT Support Team for advice.
