How to use your university library service

Introduction

We have three campus libraries, with stock to support all the subjects taught at the University. We have nearly 132,000 printed books, 70 current print journal titles, more than 950,000 electronic journals and over 18,000 e-books. We also provide access to a huge number of electronic databases, which may be used to search for information in books, journals and other publications. Our electronic resources are available to users both on and off campus.

Avery Hill Library Tour

Welcome to Avery Hill Library

Avery Hill Library is located on the ground floor of the Library and Health Sciences Building. It is divided into 3 connected sections: The main section and the ground floors of GREY and FRY buildings.  All books are in the Library and Health Sciences Building.

The tour takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Click on the arrows to move between sections.

Library Turnstiles

Your Greenwich Gateway ID card is also your Library card. You need it to get in and out of the building, borrow books and to photocopy, scan and print.

Please go through the turnstiles and click "Library Welcome Desk" to begin the tour.

Library Welcome Desk

The Library Health Sciences Building is open 8am-9pm weekdays and 9am-5pm at weekends.

These hours may vary at certain times of year. Please check our opening hours to confirm opening times before you visit.

If you need any assistance, come to the Welcome Desk, where a member of staff is available to help you 8am-5pm weekdays and 9am-5pm at weekends.

All in one Self Issue and Return machines

This is a quick and easy way to borrow and return your books.
To borrow, tap your card on the machine and place your books on the space indicated under the screen.
To return, place your books on the space indicated under the screen.  Once the books are returned place them through the hole in the wall.

Students can borrow up to 40 books at a time. Books will be issued for either 4 weeks, or 7 days, they will renew automatically unless reserved by another user.
 

Reservation Shelves

Using LibrarySearch, you can place reservations on items stocked at another campus libraries or if there are no available copies. You will receive an email when they are ready for collection.

You can reserve up to 10 books at any one time.

The Printers

We have two high performance multi-function devices (MFDs) which can be used for printing, photocopying and scanning, one located in the Library Health Sciences Building, the other in Fry.

Food and Drink

Cold food and drinks are allowed in all parts of the library EXCEPT in the SILENT ROOM located in Grey Building.

A water fountain and two vending machines are located in the Library and Health Sciences Building opposite to the turnstiles. 

 

Toilets

There are male, female and accessible toilets in the Health Sciences Building  near the vending machines (opposite to the Welcome desk).  We also have gender neutral toilets and accessible toilets in Fry and Grey. 

Bookable Study Rooms

We have six group study rooms: four in Fry and two in Grey.
The rooms are of various sizes and contain a range of technologies.
 

Silent Study Rooms

Our Silent Study Rooms are located on the ground floor of Grey building and are reserved for silent study only with strictly no talking and no food.
 

The Academic Skills Hub

You can book an appointment for 1:1 support and advice (on campus or online) from your Academic Subject Librarian or Academic Skills Tutor libcal.gre.ac.uk/appointments.

Computers and IT support

You can log on to the computers with your Greenwich username and password. 

eduroam Wi-Fi is available across campus including the library. 

Contact IT Services for help with printing, setting up your Wi-Fi (eduroam), your university email account and much more.

Stockwell Street Library Tour

Welcome to Stockwell Street Library

Please use this guide to explore the key locations on the ground floor, then go beyond and discover what else we have to offer. Stockwell Street Library has five floors and most books are on the basement, first and second floors. The tour takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. 

How to navigate this guide

Every stage of your tour will contain at least one photo or video, and a short description about where you are and what you are looking at, plus additional information. Use the arrows to the left and right of the images to move through the pages of the tour.

Library Turnstiles

Food and Drink

Cold food and drinks are allowed in the basement, ground floor and first floor. There is also a vending machine on the ground floor for hot drinks.

Come to the Library Welcome Desk if you need any assistance. We are here from 8am to 9pm during the week and 9am to 5pm at weekends.

Meet the Academic Support Team

Vik

Vik is the Academic Services Librarian for law, criminology, history, politics and social science, as well as literature, language and theatre.

 

Mike

Mike is an Academic Skills Tutor. He holds workshops and individual appointments online.

IT Help Desk

IT support staff are available to help you with basic queries. Contact IT Services for additional help with printing, setting up your Wi-Fi (eduroam), your university email account and much more:

The Self-Issue Machines

Computers:

You can log on to the computers and printers with your Greenwich username and password. We have over 250 Windows PCs and Apple iMacs.

Plotter

Our plotter, which is on the 1st floor, can print in colour on paper sizes A2, A1 and A0.

  • You can check printing prices on the university website.
  • Next to the plotter there is also a large-format scanner.

Water Fountains

Water fountains are located on all floors.

Toilets

There are male, female and accessible toilets located on all floors.

Lifts

We have two lifts in the library.

The Printers

Here are our printers, also known as Multi-Functional Devices or MFDs. You can print, photocopy and scan on any floor of the Library, except the third.

Bookable Group Study Rooms

We have 10 group study rooms at the back of the 1st and 2nd floor. The rooms are of various sizes and contain a range of technologies.

Pods

We also have 3 bookable pods for single occupancy.

Stockwell Street Aerial Tour

The Aerial Library Tour will take you approximately two minutes, and is a good starting point to using the Library. The purpose of this tour is to show you what we can provide, so that you can get the best out of this service.
